Celebrating Intelerad’s first 15 years

This month marks Intelerad’s 15th anniversary as a company – a significant milestone which we’re all quite proud of.

For those unaware of our company’s history, Intelerad was founded by our CTO Chris Henri, CIO Robert Cox and Chief Engineer Rick Rubin. The three of them were the core team behind a couple of Canada’s earliest large-scale PACS deployments, which took place at the two largest university teaching institutions in Montreal and Toronto in the mid-to-late 90s. I joined the team shortly after they made the decision to move to the private sector.bonhomme

A lot has changed since our first days as a company. When Intelerad first opened in January 2000, it was made up of a small team of five, based in Montreal and intent on making a difference in the world of medical imaging. Today, we’re a multi-national enterprise with nearly 275 employees, based in North America, Oceania and the UK, with a proven track record of developing innovative solutions and providing industry-leading support.

In terms of our customer base, we’ve partnered with leading medical imaging providers around the world, across all market segments. This includes large public and private hospitals, innovative ambulatory providers and massive teleradiology organizations, such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Teleradiology Program.

Developing long-term relationships with our customer base has allowed us to work in a collaborative manner to ensure their needs are always met. In fact, customer influence has played a role in the the development of Intelerad solutions that users enjoy and depend on each day.

While it’s nice to reflect on our achievements of the past 15 years, there is still a lot of work to do and we are by no means getting comfortable. In an industry that is constantly changing, now more than ever we need to ensure that we are developing the best solutions possible, so our customers can continue to thrive and deliver the highest quality patient care. We look forward to the challenge, and to serving our customers in the years to come.

Driving Imaging Enterprises’ Performance and Quality

With RSNA taking place in the first week of December, autumn is always a busy time of year at Intelerad. This year was no exception as the event was preceded by a number of new product announcements, the launch of our new website, and, of course, tying up all the loose ends prior to our arrival in Chicago.

From start to finish, the show was a success. On top of providing us the opportunity to meet with clients and prospects, and demonstrate our products’ capabilities, the show provides a unique opportunity to take in presentations from industry leaders and meet with people from across the industry to get their perspectives.shutterstock_86074972

Of course, one of the reoccurring themes at RSNA was the market transition to a value-based model and how it will affect radiologists, who will be expected to shift their focus from  reading volume to the overall patient experience they provide. As a solution provider, this means providing solutions that increase radiologists’ productivity levels, as well as the quality of their reads.

An example of this is the Performance and Quality Suite that we introduced in October. The suite groups together a number of new solutions, including:

  • Our integrated peer review module, which allows radiologists to easily fulfill their quotas by enabling them to conduct reviews directly in InteleViewer, as opposed to logging into a different program.
  • An Image Quality Review module that allows radiologists to provide feedback to technologists regarding the quality of images produced.
  • A Resident Over-Reads module that provides a specially-designed workflow for radiologists in training.
  • A Critical Results Management module that allows radiologists to track their most important cases.

The suite also includes Intelerad Analytics™, which provides real-time metrics sourced directly from your PACS, so that enterprises can accurately assess their operations and institute a culture of continual improvement.

While the transition to value-based imaging will come with a number of challenges, we look forward to continually assessing our clients’ needs and developing solutions that will help their enterprises overcome hurdles and achieve their goals.

 

Bringing our philosophy to the U.K. market

As you may have seen from this morning’s press release, today marks another milestone for Intelerad as we announced plans to expand our U.K. operations. We’re excited about this new chapter, which follows a period of success that we’ve experienced in the region through our existing customer base, and will ideally lead to the U.K. playing a larger role in our global operations.

One of the advantages of having a customer base already developed in the U.K. is that it provides us with a better understanding of the challenges facing public and private radiology organizations, including NHS Hospitals and Trusts.  bonhomme

The truth is, we’re an alternative to legacy PACS providers, not only in the solutions we provide, but in our philosophy as well. As opposed to fixating on financial results for the market or equity partners, our reason for being is to help organizations provide the highest possible levels of patient care in the most efficient way possible. It’s for this reason that we constantly look at ways to improve the solutions we build and the support we provide – so we can deliver the best possible customer experience to organizations who aim to perform at the highest level.

This philosophy means that we are also selective in who we choose as employees. While this can create staffing challenges at times, it enables us to maintain a team that is both highly-talented and willing to go the extra mile. It also means that we can trust our staff to think a little “outside of the box” when deploying our solutions  to help customers achieve their goals – a level of flexibility that not every solution provider can deliver.

In sticking by this ideology for the past 14 years, we’ve built a significant list of accomplishments. On top of being named as the top ambulatory PACS on the market seven times, we’ve also won awards for our workflow solutions and have received a great deal of recognition for the services and support we provide. We’ve also grown organically, with our staff now surpassing 250 people, and our customer base ranging from small imaging centres to large hospitals across the U.K., North America and Oceania.

We’re looking forward to applying our philosophy to a wider U.K. market, and providing solutions, services and support that will take your operations to the next level. Counting down the days until RSNA 2013

It’s been an eventful autumn at Intelerad®, from the announcement of new customers, such as Radisphere and U.S. Veterans Affairs National Teleradiology Program, to the launch of new solutions and key updates to our RIS and PACS. With RSNA now just days away, we’re eager to arrive in Chicago to meet with existing and prospective customers to demonstrate the value of our offerings.

For this year’s event, Intelerad will be located at booth 2165 in Hall A of the event center’s South Building. As you may have seen on our RSNA microsite, we have a completely redesigned booth. As in past years, this year we will be providing demos on all of our existing solutions, and providing previews of those that we announced this past fall. This includes:

  • Intelerad Analytics™, which helps optimize performance across the organization by providing comprehensive, real-time metrics to business managers, chief radiologists and operational support staff, to ensure compliance with SLAs and that your organization’s resources are fully leveraged.
  • IntelePACS® 481, which offers enhanced Image Fusion capabilities, an updated Multi-Method Reporting™ module, and new Technologist tools.
  • InteleConnect® Patterns, which provides radiology organizations with geographic, behavioral and acquisition data from their InteleConnect® Referring Physicians Portal.
  • InteleRIS™ 8.224, which features a new optional Mammo Reporting Module, enhanced scheduling, a complete-and-hold function for technologists, patient-signed outside prior requests, and the ability to import PDF reports from outside systems via HL7. Intelerad will also preview the Scheduling Portal for Patients and Referring Physicians, which will be available in future versions of InteleRIS.

A fantastic venue, the setting will provide our customers with the chance to interact in a social environment and take in the museum’s impressionism gallery, which is quite impressive.

Last, but not least, at the customer night, we will have the editorial staff from Radiology Business Journal on-hand to announce the Radiology 100, which recognizes the 100 largest private practices in the nation. In past years, we’ve had a number of customers who have been named to this list, and we anticipate that this will be the case this year as well.

Expanding the Capabilities of Your RIS

As the Intelerad Chief Clinical Systems Officer responsible for the InteleRIS Solution’s R&D, I wanted to share some thoughts and insights following our recent version 8.224 announcement.

Across InteleRIS releases, our goal is always to provide a solution that truly increases the productivity of all your staff. As we conducted our research into what we could add for this version, we spoke to numerous customers, whose thoughts and insight lead us to focus on adding four key items: enhanced scheduling features, a complete-and-hold function for technologists, patient-signed outside prior requests, and the ability to import PDF reports from outside systems using HL7 protocols.

While these four new features add great value, the item that we are most excited about in this release is undoubtedly the mammo reporting module. The concept for this module came about as we looked at ways of enhancing the productivity of  staff in clinics that perform breast imaging procedures.InteleRIS logo

Whereas a lot of health organizations rely on third-party systems to gain the features and functionality found in this module, we felt that direct integration into the RIS was the best option as it would eliminate the challenges that come with using an external product, including the need to build a data interface, higher training and support costs, and lower data quality. The mammo module includes BI-RADS and patient history worksheets, fully customizable letter templates, and extensive query capabilities to ensure that no patient falls through the cracks. It also will allow you to run the reports you need to maintain your MQSA certification.

As happy as we are with this latest release, we are pretty excited for a feature that will be available in future versions of InteleRIS early in the new year. We are planning on adding a Scheduling Portal for Patients and Referring Physicians to InteleRIS. This feature will expand the capabilities of radiology information systems by providing self-service scheduling, saving hours upon hours for staff that are responsible for booking appointments and allowing patients to schedule exams at their convenience.

This past month, we hosted a free webinar entitled How to Adapt to a Value-Based Radiology Model and Grow Your Business. The webinar was quite interesting, as Dr. Chad Calendine, Chief Medical Officer of Optimal Radiology Partners, and Dr. James C. King, President of Phydata, discussed how their successful sub-specialty reading business operates and how they’ve achieved the following:

  • 30% reduction in turnaround time
  • 18% increase in overall efficiency
  • High-quality service provided regardless of geography

Improving on these key performance indicators has helped Optimal grow their business, which today reads more than two million studies per year.

The webinar also featured an introduction from Curtis Kauffman-Pickelle, President and CEO of ImagingBiz, who provided an overview of the threats currently facing the radiology industry, as well as some insight regarding business strategies to ensure the success of radiology practices.
