Boosting Performance in a Nationally-Distributed Enterprise

by Paul Atkinson, Marketing Community Manager, Intelerad

Intelerad’s web-based architecture has long been known for enabling high performance in complex environments – from hospitals to large multi-site radiology enterprises and teleradiology groups.

In 2013, NationalRad, a leading subspecialty diagnostic radiology practice located in south Florida, deployed IntelePACS® across their nationwide network of radiologists. In doing so, their team was equipped with an intuitive, industry-leading viewer in InteleViewer™, with rapid access to patient images and information.Chrome Legacy Window 2262015 14610 PM

Last week, we published a case study in which NationalRad’s COO Karen Jodat and Director of IT Ben Gustman discuss the difference that Intelerad has made to their enterprise, which interprets over 100,000 subspecialty exams each year for approximately 125 clients.

In addition to discussing the benefits of system stability, a vastly improved workflow, and Intelerad’s referring physician’s portal, Mr. Gustman describes the positive experience of working with Intelerad’s team.

“At Intelerad, the people, and how they handle things, has really made a difference for us,” said Gustman. “On top of that, the software’s very intuitive. We got trained on the software, but it really didn’t require a whole lot of training. It just made sense right from the beginning.”

Celebrating Intelerad’s first 15 years

by Randall Oka, President and CEO, Intelerad

This month marks Intelerad’s 15th anniversary as a company – a significant milestone which we’re all quite proud of.

For those unaware of our company’s history, Intelerad was founded by our CTO Chris Henri, CIO Robert Cox and Chief Engineer Rick Rubin. The three of them were the core team behind a couple of Canada’s earliest large-scale PACS deployments, which took place at the two largest university teaching institutions in Montreal and Toronto in the mid-to-late 90s. I joined the team shortly after they made the decision to move to the private sector.bonhomme

A lot has changed since our first days as a company. When Intelerad first opened in January 2000, it was made up of a small team of five, based in Montreal and intent on making a difference in the world of medical imaging. Today, we’re a multi-national enterprise with nearly 275 employees, based in North America, Oceania and the UK, with a proven track record of developing innovative solutions and providing industry-leading support.

In terms of our customer base, we’ve partnered with leading medical imaging providers around the world, across all market segments. This includes large public and private hospitals, innovative ambulatory providers and massive teleradiology organizations, such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Teleradiology Program.

Developing long-term relationships with our customer base has allowed us to work in a collaborative manner to ensure their needs are always met. In fact, customer influence has played a role in the the development of Intelerad solutions that users enjoy and depend on each day.

While it’s nice to reflect on our achievements of the past 15 years, there is still a lot of work to do and we are by no means getting comfortable. In an industry that is constantly changing, now more than ever we need to ensure that we are developing the best solutions possible, so our customers can continue to thrive and deliver the highest quality patient care. We look forward to the challenge, and to serving our customers in the years to come.

Using Multi-Method Reporting to Drive Productivity

By Paul Atkinson, Marketing Community Manager, Intelerad

Last month, we launched the new version of Intelerad.com. On top of giving our website a fresh new look that is both responsive and easy to navigate, we re-categorized our solutions into five sections: Image and Workflow Management, Offsite Reading and Reporting, Enterprise Viewing, Performance and Quality Suite, and Multi-Method Reporting.

The last item on that list, Multi-Method Reporting, or MMR, refers to radiologists’ reporting environment and our solution of the same name, which blends dictation, speech recognition and structured reports together into a single, streamlined interface and workflow.monitor

Customers who have deployed MMR have had some great success using the solution. For example, Carolina Regional Radiology (CRR) were able to use the solution to drive their average wRVUs to nearly 80 at a time when the national benchmark was between 65 and 69. Even more impressive, the group’s breast imaging program was able to increase their daily average wRVUs by 55% (more info).

So what does the solution do?

On top of leveraging dictation and speech recognition, MMR provides templates that add a high level of structure for radiologists’ reporting process. Tailored to their needs, each report is completed the same way and contains the information required by the referring physician. By making reporting a repetitious, process-driven task, radiologists can continually increase their daily throughput.

A highly intuitive solution, MMR drives productivity further by allowing for sections of reports to be filled automatically using quick text, so standard reports are completed in little time and then digitally signed and sent directly to a transcriptionist.

Well-regarded for its ease-of-use, the solution allows the user to quickly choose their preferred method of speech recognition solution via dropdown. When using a speech recognition module in conjunction with MMR, the radiologist can choose between multiple signing workflows, including self-edit, deferred self-edit, or send to the typist.

Driving Imaging Enterprises’ Performance and Quality

By Paul Atkinson, Marketing Community Manager, Intelerad

With RSNA taking place in the first week of December, autumn is always a busy time of year at Intelerad. This year was no exception as the event was preceded by a number of new product announcements, the launch of our new website, and, of course, tying up all the loose ends prior to our arrival in Chicago.

From start to finish, the show was a success. On top of providing us the opportunity to meet with clients and prospects, and demonstrate our products’ capabilities, the show provides a unique opportunity to take in presentations from industry leaders and meet with people from across the industry to get their perspectives.shutterstock_86074972

Of course, one of the reoccurring themes at RSNA was the market transition to a value-based model and how it will affect radiologists, who will be expected to shift their focus from  reading volume to the overall patient experience they provide. As a solution provider, this means providing solutions that increase radiologists’ productivity levels, as well as the quality of their reads.

An example of this is the Performance and Quality Suite that we introduced in October. The suite groups together a number of new solutions, including:

  • Our integrated peer review module, which allows radiologists to easily fulfill their quotas by enabling them to conduct reviews directly in InteleViewer, as opposed to logging into a different program.
  • An Image Quality Review module that allows radiologists to provide feedback to technologists regarding the quality of images produced.
  • A Resident Over-Reads module that provides a specially-designed workflow for radiologists in training.
  • A Critical Results Management module that allows radiologists to track their most important cases.

The suite also includes Intelerad Analytics™, which provides real-time metrics sourced directly from your PACS, so that enterprises can accurately assess their operations and institute a culture of continual improvement.

While the transition to value-based imaging will come with a number of challenges, we look forward to continually assessing our clients’ needs and developing solutions that will help their enterprises overcome hurdles and achieve their goals.

Expanding Our Services and Support to Better Serve Customers

by Anibal Jodorcovsky, Chief Customer Officer, Intelerad

As a provider of ‘mission critical’ radiology systems to all types of healthcare organizations, we place a great deal of emphasis on providing customers with the highest possible levels of service and support. It’s for this reason that we developed our Intelerad Pulse solution (which monitors our customers’ systems 24/7), maintain strict hiring criteria and provide rigorous training to our staff.

Also, as an organization that continues to grow year after year, we employ steps to ensure our customers receive the same high quality service that they’re accustomed to. As such, I’m pleased to announce the expansion of our deployment and technical support teams in North America and Australia.iStock_000007230661Large

In North America, we have increased the number of on-call resources to ensure that calls escalated outside of regular operating hours are effectively managed. We have also adjusted the structure of our technical support team, adding two new supervisors who will oversee the work performed by our technicians.

In Australia, we have added team members who are locally-based and dedicated to the region, to better serve customer needs, both in resolving support queries and deploying new solutions. This additional personnel, who will be operational in early 2015, will complement the existing Oceania team, which is currently comprised of local Account Managers, Project Managers, Field Analysts, Application Specialists, RIS specialists and Executive Management.

With these changes, we are better equipped to ensure that deployments go smoothly, and that any technical issue that arises is resolved in the shortest possible timeframe. As always, we value your thoughts and look forward to providing you with leading-edge solutions, services and support in the years to come. If you have any comments, please feel free to leave them below.

Using InteleOne to modernize first- and second-generation PACS in the UK

By Roy Kinnear, U.K. Sales Manager, Intelerad

It’s now been six months since Intelerad® announced they are in the U.K. market – opening an office in Manchester and hiring full-time staff to better serve customers and grow business in the region. To date, the expansion has been successful, with medical imaging providers showing a great deal of interest in our solutions, and one local NHS trust selecting InteleOne® to serve as their enterprise workflow solution.InteleOne-grey-red

The trust in question will be using InteleOne to solve a problem facing a large number of medical imaging providers in the region: they’re not in the position to do a full PACS replacement, but are limited by the functionality provided by their first- or second-generation PACS. An example of this would be how organizations transfer images. Not only are a lot of organizations working with compact discs, but they often have staff dedicated to transferring images from portal to portal.

When clinicians and IT staff see a solution like InteleOne, and its fresh way of sharing images, the possibilities of what can be accomplished when the right solutions are available to them becomes clear. Providing a slick user experience that puts the right workflow and toolsets in users’ hands allows for leaps in productivity and quality of reads.

What helps with InteleOne, is that it provides radiology groups and departments with all the features and benefits of a modern PACS, without having to do a complete PACS replacement. Instead, the solution’s interoperability allows it to sit on top of existing PACS (this can be a single PACS, multiple PACS from different vendors), and pull the images (including priors) into a common worklist and viewer.

InteleOne has brought a lot of success to customers in the U.S. (case studies can be found here) and we’re looking forward to replicating this success in the U.K. If you’re interested in learning more about InteleOne’s features and benefits, we have a KLAS report on the solution available, or feel free to reach out to us directly.
